caffeine and me

caffeineCaffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a stimulant drug. Caffeine is found in varying quantities in the seeds, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants. It is most commonly consumed by humans in infusions extracted from the seed of the coffee plant and the leaves of the tea bush, as well as from various foods and drinks containing products derived from the kola nut. Other sources include yerba maté, guarana berries, guayusa, and the yaupon holly.

In humans, caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant, temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. It is the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive drug, but, unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is both legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world. Beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks, enjoy great popularity; in North America, 90% of adults consume caffeine daily.[4]Caffeine5981

Caffeine is toxic at sufficiently high doses, but ordinary consumption poses few known health risks, even when carried on for years — there may be a modest protective effect against some diseases, including certain types of cancer. Some people experience sleep disruption if they consume caffeine, especially during the evening hours, but others show little disturbance and the effect of caffeine on sleep is highly variable.

Evidence of a risk to pregnancy is equivocal, but some authorities have concluded that prudent advice is for pregnant women to limit consumption to the equivalent of two cups of coffee per day or less.[5] Caffeine has diuretic properties when administered to people who are not used to it, but regular users develop a tolerance to this effect, and studies have generally failed to support the common notion that ordinary consumption contributes significantly to dehydration. With heavy use, strong tolerance develops rapidly and caffeine can produce clinically significant physical and mental dependence.

Years ago I stopped my journey with caffeine! It had to end…I had to know if it was the cause of all my issues.  It has been about 5 years since I totally stopped caffeine. I did have a relapse if you would about 2 years ago when I was forced to drink some Coke for NSTs while Pregnant.  Yeah not what I wanted to do.  But I did it.

Caffeine is in everything I am finding out.  Well not everything…but a lot of things.  Soda (not that I drank it much anyways), coffee (I do like me some Biggby, can’t even have Decaf because there is still small amounts of caffeine in it), cocoa, chocolate, energy drinks, excedrin, tea….

Drink/Food Amount of Drink/Food Amount of Caffeine
Mountain Dew 12 ounces 55.0 mg
Coca-Cola 12 ounces 34.0 mg
Diet Coke 12 ounces 45.0 mg
Pepsi 12 ounces 38.0 mg
7-Up 12 ounces 0 mg
Brewed coffee (drip method) 5 ounces 115 mg*
Iced tea 12 ounces 70 mg*
Dark chocolate 1 ounce 20 mg*
Milk chocolate 1 ounce 6 mg*
Cocoa beverage 5 ounces 4 mg*
Chocolate milk beverage 8 ounces 5 mg*
Cold relief medication 1 tablet 30 mg*

The smallest amount of caffeine can give me a migraine.  I mean that one day I only had 2 mini Hershey bars and that night…BAM…I had a migraine.  Even decaf coffee gives me a headache.

Apparently they even have SOAP that has caffeine in it…so crazy…check it out here.

Sooooo I refuse to drink or have anything with caffeine in it again.

I bet you all wonder how I stay awake….I know many people use it to keep themselves awake and going during the day…..well my friends….Vit B12 is your friend…..I take it every day!! It works…Try it!!

Now if caffeine didn’t give me migraine/headaches I probably would be drinking some.  Just maybe….Not sure!!

mothers day at the beach {project 366 :: day 133}

For Mother’s Day :: We decided to take the kids to Grand haven. It was a perfect day for it. I was very happy when we got to the beach and it was gorgeous! Not many people there and it wasn’t too hot….and not too cold. Well the water was but that’s okay. These kids had soooo much fun and so did we. It was great watching them play in the sand.

a day with thomas {project 366 :: day 132}

Today we drove to meet Thomas the Train. Ethan has always been a huge fan of Thomas. We did not tell him till we were pulling into Greenfield Village. We kept it a surprise. And boy was he so excited. HE LOVES surprises. (and I love doing it to him) He couldn’t wait to go take a ride on him and see him. I wanted to do it now before he grew Thomas. So it had to be this year. IT was perfect because he really liked it.

happy tot {project 366 :: day 131}

I am so glad that my daughter loves these. She seems to be picky about food. Even Ethan likes them. So he eats them as a snack too…which is fine with me because I know they are healthy. It is just like applesauce for him anyways…=)
